The Festool 491473 is the SP-TS 55/5 splinter guard, sold as a pack of 5. It replaces the viewing window on compatible Festool plunge-cut saws and gives low-splinter cuts to the right of the blade, the side that faces the offcut when you work along a guide rail.

How It Works

Fit the guard in place of the viewing window and run the saw. The spinning blade cuts into the guard, so it fits that blade exactly and supports the fibres right at the cut. This guard is not for the newer TS 55 R, TS 55 F or TSC 55 saws; for those, use the SP-TS 55 R/5 (499011).

Typical Uses

Main uses are door cut-outs and panel cuts, where both sides of the cut need to stay clean. Cabinet shops and finish carpenters fit the Festool 491473 when cutting veneered panels, melamine and laminate.

Tips

Replace the guard when you switch to a blade with a different kerf width, so the opening matches the new blade. Keep a spare from the pack in the saw case, and fit a fresh one as soon as the edge starts to break down. A guard with a chipped edge no longer supports the fibres and gives little benefit.

Festool makes splinter guards for specific saw generations, so confirm the model on the saw label before you order. If you run both older and newer saws, keep a pack of each guard with the matching saw.
