The Festool 492271 is the IP-STF-D120/8-J, an extremely soft foam interface pad that fits between a 5 inch (125 mm) sander pad and the abrasive. It lets the disc float over the surface, so it follows curves, mouldings and delicate profiles for a smoother finish and fewer sand-throughs at edges.

How It Works

Press the Festool 492271 onto the StickFix face of the sander pad, then press the abrasive disc onto the interface pad. For superfine sanding the foam absorbs part of the energy from the user and the machine, which means less aggressive abrasion and a higher-grade finish on contoured parts.

Who Uses It

Furniture finishers, cabinet shops, boat and auto refinishers and woodturners use an interface pad on shaped parts: chair spindles, raised panels, mouldings, curved rails and rounded edges. It is also a good choice for final sanding between coats of finish, where cutting through a thin film is the main risk.

Tips for Best Results

Line up the holes of the interface pad with the sander pad so extraction stays strong. An interface pad softens the cut, so it works best with medium and fine grits for finishing rather than heavy stock removal. Keep pressure light so the foam is not crushed flat, and replace the interface pad when its hook face stops holding discs firmly or the foam starts to tear.
