Choosing a random orbital sander
A random orbital sander (also called a dual action or DA sander) spins the pad while it orbits, so the scratch pattern never repeats. That gives fast removal with a clean, swirl-free finish.
Pad size
6-inch pads cover large flat panels faster. 5-inch pads are lighter and easier to control on edges, curves and small parts.
Orbit (stroke)
A larger orbit (3/16-inch) removes material faster for coarse grits. A smaller orbit (3/32-inch) leaves a finer finish for final sanding and paint prep.
Air or electric
The Dynabrade Dynorbital Extreme and Dynorbital-Spirit run on shop compressed air and are built for long production shifts. The Festool ETS EC 150 and ETS 125 are electric and connect to a Festool dust extractor.
Vacuum or non-vacuum
Vacuum models pull dust through the pad holes. Match your discs to the pad hole pattern; see Sanding Disc Hole Patterns.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy a random orbital sander in Calgary?
At IBEX Enterprises, Unit 208, 2835 23 St NE, Calgary. Local pickup is Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, and we also ship across Canada from Calgary.
Is a random orbital sander the same as a DA sander?
Yes. DA (dual action) sander is the common autobody name for a random orbital sander: the pad rotates and orbits at the same time.
What grit sanding discs do I use on a random orbital sander?
Start around 80 grit to remove material or old finish, move through 120 and 150, and finish at 180 to 220 for bare wood. Paint prep often goes finer. Our sanding grit guide explains each step.
