Track saw basics
A track saw (plunge-cut saw) runs on an aluminum guide rail, so you get straight, splinter-free cuts in sheet goods without a table saw. It is the go-to tool for breaking down plywood, MDF and melamine in the shop or on site.
Choosing guide rails
- Pick a rail a little longer than your longest cut. The FS 1400 (55-inch) handles cross cuts on 4-foot panels; the FS 1900 handles longer rips.
- Join two rails with an FSV guide rail connector to rip full 8-foot sheets.
- FSZ clamps hold the rail on the work; the FS-PA parallel guides make repeat cuts the same width.
- Replace the splinter guard on the rail when it wears to keep cuts clean.
Blades
Use a fine-tooth blade for veneered plywood and melamine and a lower-tooth-count blade for ripping solid wood. See Festool circular saw blades.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy a Festool track saw in Calgary?
At IBEX Enterprises, Unit 208, 2835 23 St NE, Calgary. Local pickup is Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, and we also ship across Canada from Calgary.
Do I need a guide rail with a track saw?
Yes, for straight cuts. The saw base locks onto the rail; the rail's splinter guard gives a clean edge and shows exactly where the cut will be.
How do I cut a full 8 foot sheet with a track saw?
Join two guide rails end to end with a guide rail connector (Festool FSV), or use one rail long enough for the cut.
